Some bike parts have a date code cast or stamped into the piece. This clearly is when the component was made and not when the bike was made, but unless the component or bike manufacturer had lots of stock lying around in inventory, the date should be a fairly good indication of the year of the bike. At least it would be the earliest date that the bike could have been made. Of course, all this assumes the bike has the original component. The most likely components to be original are the stem, handlebars, seatpost, and brakes. On a vintage bike in excellent condition that apparently had a lonely existence in a garage all of the components likely are original. As the wear on a vintage bike increases, the greater the likelihood components are not original, either through replacement of worn parts or through component swaps. Swaps can take place early in the life of a bike as the proud new owner upgrades to new or used components of higher quality. Swaps also can be made as the bike falls out of favor, or is being sold, where the higher quality components are traded for lower quality ones that the owner had onhand. Don’t all cyclists have boxes and boxes of old components in their garage?
This began to turn around in the camera and electronics industries in the s, but Japanese companies didn’t figure out how to make and sell bicycles for the U. As the s opened, the U. While Japanese bicycles were manufactured to very tight tolerances, and nicely finished considerably better than their European competition , the Japanese had not yet come to terms with the average American’s being taller and heavier than the average Japanese.
This gap was wider at the time than it is now, due to the privations the Japanese population suffered during and after the war. Royce Union he most widely distributed Japanese bike of this era was sold under the name Royce Union.
Japanese tire manufacturers began using nylon, which is much stronger, and also allows a tire to be lighter.
Comment icon Bicycles and electric cars are both great ways to get about, but electric bicycles offer the best of both worlds Credit: One, a Specialized hybrid, rarely sees the light of day because I’m too worried it’ll get nicked. The other, an elderly Hercules with two-and-a-bit gears left in its crumbling Sturmey-Archer hub, has been stolen once already, and until relatively recently was my day-to-day runabout. I enjoy its charming simplicity, its flaws, and the fact that I’m probably the only person who can get it up to speed.
I’m certainly the only person who can stop it. A recent acquisition occupies the opposite end of the pushbike spectrum. Devoid as it is of idiosyncrasy and heritage, the bicycle currently wedged awkwardly into a cupboard in the office doesn’t raise a smile, nor does it look particularly nice. It’s a leviathan compared to my little three-speed and, from the wrong angle, could come across as a tad gauche.
But it’s probably just about the most environmentally-friendly vehicle I’ve used in the past ten years. I’ve driven a lot of electric cars during that time.

While Schwinn often had a reputation for building heavy bikes for kids, the Paramount line had a reputation for finely crafted, relatively light road bikes. That is obviously a great price. The very nice woman selling it was good natured about the low price. The bike had belonged to her uncle who no longer used it. I believe the frame was built in

The levels of integration and aerodynamic design have raised the bar of what we expect from road bikes. The geometry is unusual for an aero bike: There really is no scrimping on the spec here — everything is top-end kit. So although the price is high, it does include a bike fit and a Quarq. Future Shock suspension The key take away is that the bike features 20mm of front end suspension. The idea is that the system suspends the rider, allowing them to drift over bumps and uneven roads without suffering from the fatigue and loss of speed that poor surfaces create. This dampening of roughness makes for impeccable handling, especially on descents. Specialized say this is also their lightest model so the climbing is pretty good too.
Endurance geometry In keeping with the comfort focus of the bike, this is an endurance platform.
History[ edit ] Motocross first evolved in the U. Off-road bikes from that era differed little from those used on the street.
